Molnlycke - Smoke Plume

Our Services

  • This film was a technical challenge rather than a story challenge. Our director Jonathan Nicol pre-visualised all camera moves and exposures so that we could plan our field of view for width, as well as how our lighting transitions would work in-camera.

  • Produced, contracted and organised all aspects of cast, crew and equipment

Brought together a multi-talented crew to light and lens a stunning film.

  • Worked through the full editing process, from rough cut to final cut . All sound-design and colour-grading was carried out by our regular pool of freelancers.

Our regular collaborators at Twelve were once again behind this excellent concept. The concept was simple in nature, but complex in application. We begin on a close-up of an operation in full flow. The tension builds as smoke from the operation fills the lens; suddenly the camera pulls out to reveal, within one shot that the operation is taking place in a pub. Lock-up.

The Brief

Once a location was found, we started to work out the technical. Two things became apparent. The first was that we would need a wipe cut cued by a person crossing frame, in order to speed the edit up as the journey backwards from the location reveal happens. The second is that in order to fake the operating theatre, we would need to use very powerful lights along with an iris pull to capture the transition in-camera. The morning was spent rehearsing and getting the action right, then we spent the afternoon shooting.

As so much of the shoot was in-camera, post production was fairly straightforward, a little bit of sound-design and colour grading and a small roto-scope to smooth the transition and we were in great shape.
